Overview:

Barton Creek Cave is one of several underground caverns in Belize that the ancient Mayans used for ceremonies. The cave is over 4.5 miles long, with much of it still waiting to be explored. At the entrance, we board canoes and turn on our headlights to navigate the cave passage. The size of the passage ranges from huge cathedral ceilings to narrow pathways with low hanging stalactites. We paddle for about a mile, discovering the fascinating history and geology of this huge cave. We also learn about its archaeological significance to the ancient Mayans. The canoe trip is exciting, yet relaxed, taking us through a mountain on an ancient waterway. We get to see numerous formations, stalactites, and stalagmites and experience what very few have seen before. After we've finished exploring, we turn our canoes around and head back to the park, where we can take a refreshing swim to complete our half-day tour.
