Rio Maya Bird Sanctuary is the owners farm, located near the Belize River in Georgeville, Cayo District. It offers a rewarding exploration of diverse habitats. The day begins in the secondary-growth forest near the entrance, prime territory for the elusive Cabanis’s Wren. This area also supports species such as the Grey Hawks, Bat Falcon, White-fronted Amazon, and Striped Cuckoo.
Next, we make our way into the farm, where Buff-throated Saltators, Yellow-winged Tanagers, Collared Aracaris, and Keel-billed Toucans often gather.
We then follow a quiet trail to the pond and through a stand of spiny bamboo to reach the river’s edge. Along the way, we look for Amazon and Green Kingfishers, Lineated Woodpecker, Yellow-billed Cacique, Ruddy and Streak-headed Woodcreepers, and the elusive Great Antshrike.
